Overview

Carolina Asphalt specializes in the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of parking lot/pavement systems. Our services include cracksealing, sealcoating, patching, resurfacing, reclamation, removal/replacement, concrete, striping, StreetPrint, speed humps/bumps and drainage for industrial, commercial, retail and multi-family residential property and facility managers in the Carolinas.

We have briefly described these services below and have provided direct links to more in-depth information about each service in our online seminar, FAQs page and our specifications page.

Sealcoating

A pavement system is sealcoated to protect the surface from oxidation and gas and oil spills. Coal tar emulsion is applied to the surface in 2-3 coats with sand and latex (optional) added for increased durability. There are two grades of sealcoat applications, Standard and Premium. A standard sealcoat material meets Federal Specification RP-355E, is diluted with 35-40% water and can have 3% latex added on the job. A two-coat application should last 2-3 years.

A Premium sealcoat material is only diluted with 10% water and the latex is hot blended when it is manufactured. A two coat application should last 3-6 years.

Standard bid unit: square yard

Cracksealing

Used to treat isolated random cracks in a pavement system. Cracks are routed (optional) and cleaned with hot, compressed air, then a hot, rubberized asphalt material is injected into the void. Cracksealing prevents surface water from migrating through a pavement structure and into the sub-grade.

Standard bid unit: linear foot

Patching

Alligatored, or network-cracked, areas in a pavement system are sawcut in rectangular areas to a depth of 4 to 8 inches and replaced with a full-depth layer of asphalt. Only full-depth asphalt should be used because, in small areas, it is very difficult to obtain density on granular fill materials like pit gravel or crushed stone. Weak areas at the bottom of an excavation should be undercut and replaced with asphalt.

Resurfacing

A new layer of asphalt is installed over the old surface after (optional) repairs have been made and (optional) crack membrane installed. Considerations must be made to allow for proper drainage because of thickness of new surface. Resurfacing layer thickness can vary from 1.5 to 2 inches.

PermaFlex:

This is a special type of crack membrane installed before a resurfacing layer to retard crack reflection from the old pavement. The membrane can "flex" with the movement of the original pavement system so every block cracked area doesn’t need to be removed before resurfacing. In many applications, this is more cost-efective than a patch and resurface operation.

Reclamation

This is an in-place recycling process for an entire pavement system. A reclamation machine grinds up the entire surface to a depth of 6 to 12 inches and creates a new base, similar in appearance to a standard crushed aggregate base course (CABC). The new base material can be treated with cement or lime before it is set up like new stone base and a new layer of asphalt is installed.

Removal/Replacement

This is the most extreme rehabilitation process there is. It is only needed in cases where the existing pavement system is completely unusable due to old age, neglect or change of use.

Concrete

Carolina Asphalt can remove and replace (or install new) concrete dumpster pads, sidewalks, curb and gutter and miscellaneous flatwork. Special additives can be used to accelerate curing time. Wire mesh can be installed to improve strength of concrete.

Standard bid unit: square foot or linear foot

Striping

Carolina Asphalt provides any type of striping required in a parking lot from line striping and directional arrows to curb painting, custom stencils and signage. Paint can be latex or oil and can have reflective beads added.

Standard bid unit: lump sum

StreetPrint

StreetPrint is textured asphalt bonded and sealed with a protective base coat and then covered with a colored acrylic. StreetPrint has the appearance of real brick but is easier to maintain, quicker to install and can also count for LEED credit. It is available in many colors and patterns to suit a variety of needs. It can be installed as new construction or over existing pavement. It can be used in traffic control as imprint on speed humps or as crosswalk.

Standard bid unit: varies

Learn more about StreetPrint and see available colors and patterns at IPC (StreetPrint manufacturer). Carolina Asphalt is an authorized installer of StreetPrint.

Speed humps/Bumps

Speed humps are large, traffic-calming devices used by municipalities and homeowners associations to reduce speeding and cut-through traffic on streets. Speed humps are usually 22 feet deep and can be constructed with an imprinted brick top.

Standard unit: per hump

Speed bumps are narrow, traffic-calming devices used in parking lots to protect pedestrians. Speedbumps are 3 to 4 feet deep, 3 inches high and painted white or yellow.

Standard unit: linear foot

Drainage

Carolina Asphalt can construct both surface and sub-surface drainage systems.

Surface drainage can include catch basins, swales and curb and gutter.

Standard unit: various

Sub-surface drainage (French drain) is used to intercept a water source before it can penetrate the sub-grade under a pavement system. French drains can be pre-fabricated or traditional depending on need.

Standard unit: linear foot
